PRESS RELEASE       The Gloucester SPCA, Will Participate in the International Dog Bite Prevention Challenge Bathurst,  April 23, 2012, The Gloucester SPCA, will participate with Doggone Safe in the International Dog Bite Prevention Challenge. It challenges its presenters to visit schools and educate 50,000 children about dog safety in a single month. The Challenge will occur during Dog Bite Prevention Week (May 20-26, 2012). So far 57 presenters have pledged to educate over 18,000 kids in eight countries, five Canadian provinces and twenty four US states. Half of all children are bitten by a dog and most of the time the biter is the family dog or another dog known to the child. “The number of  bites to children is atrociously high and can easily be reduced through education. The  Be a Tree program aims to provide this education”, said Teresa Lewin, vice president and cofounder of Doggone Safe.Robert Metzler is a presenter of the “Be a Tree” dog bite prevention program for school children. The program is delivered by Doggone Safe presenters, veterinary technicians, dog trainers, dog behaviorists, public health nurses, emergency medical services personnel, animal control officers, police officers, teachers and humane educators. Presenters use a teacher kit which contains large format photographs showing dog body language signs, games and activities. Program sponsors can purchase supplementary branded learning materials such as coloring books, paint sheets, a story book, a poster, stickers, bookmarks and fridge magnets. Over 700,000 children worldwide have experienced the Be a Tree presentation since 2004. Through the International Dog Bite Prevention Challenge, Doggone Safe aims to increase this number significantly.“I love ‘be a tree’ (and ‘be a rock’). It's the best of its kind. This information has to get out there, said Jean Donaldson – Internationally recognized dog behavior expert, award-winning author and director of the Academy for Dog Trainers. For more information about the Challenge please visit the Doggone Safe website at www.doggonesafe.com. Presentations for schools or community groups in the Chaleur and Restigouche  region can be booked directly through The Gloucester SPCA at 548-8537 or gloucesterspca@nb.aibn.com Contact info :Robert Metzler Doggone Safe presenter and PresidentGloucester SPCA880 Riordon DriveBathurst, NB. CAR WASH in JUNE!!!

The Bathurst SPCA will be holding a fundraising dog wash on June 16 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sobey's Parking Lot! Volunteers needed!

A big thank you to all who have and continue to donate blankets, gloves, bleach, food, time and money. Thank you to the businesses in the community and their employees for helping us through this difficult time.  It makes all of us at the Bathurst SPCA feel like you all care as much for these animals as we knew you did!!! Thank you again from the bottom of our hearts!

A letter from the Bathurst SPCA president and board of directors:

Animal Shelter (Bathurst) Inc. is an incorporated Charity, which was established in 1970, by volunteers from the public, to provide shelter, care and home placement for the unwanted or abandoned pet animals of Gloucester County. From humble beginnings in a construction trailer on Sutherland Avenue, supported by grant monies from the Sir James A. Dunn Foundation, we were able to shelter and care for 6 dogs and 10 cats at any one time. Through realization that this facility was inadequate to service the needs of the community, the Board of Directors decided to move the shelter from Sutherland to our present location at 880 Riordon Drive. This was financially possible by a bequest of $165,000 which was invested, Monies from the Sir James A. Dunn foundation and a contractual agreement with the City of Bathurst to provide animal control and impound services.  At this location, we have been able to house and provide care for an average of 900 stray and owner released animals a year. Through the diligent efforts of our volunteers, paid (minimum wage) staff of 10 individuals, the internet and reputation in  animal welfare advocacy we presently place 63% of the dogs and 22% of the cats that enter our facility into forever homes.

In 2004 with the passing of Dr. Forbes McCloud who was the executor of the Sir James A Dunn Foundation, the monies which we received annually from this foundation ($16,000.00) were redirected to the New Brunswick Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. At that time, that organization was at the point of bankruptcy. With the closure of the Smurfit-Stone mill and the downturn in the economy we are facing our greatest challenges, since our existence, in remaining financially viable. We are facing increased numbers of animal control responses (over 60 calls a month) and intakes, both strays and owner released animals.  Presently, it costs over $20,000.00 per month to provide animal control and animal welfare services to the region. We receive $6,081.50 monthly from the city of Bathurst to provide animal control and pound services for the community. We receive an average of 10 calls per day from people looking to release their animals to the shelter because they can no longer care for them. Because of lack of space and money we are unable to accommodate many of them. Cat overpopulation in the city continues to be at an epidemic level, as owners simply cannot afford to spay and neuter their pets and our Animal Control officers spend countless hours in the trapping of feral cats, because owners simply abandon their pets.

All told, the shelter is in dire straits. At present, our animal control vehicles are 10 years old and at the end of their reliability. We cannot even afford to cover the taxes to purchase a new one. Without a reliable vehicle we will be unable to service our contracts. Our building is in dire need of a new roof and repairs. The present ventilation system, which is over 10 years old, no longer protects the shelter from airborne bacteria that threatens, not only, the health of the inhabitants but the financial burden of treating the animals which might become ill as a result of a major outbreak of disease. It is becoming more difficult for our employees to sustain basic amenities on the wages they receive and we have lost valuable experienced employees to other employers as a result and will continue to do so if we cannot increase their wages and benefits.

It is therefore necessary to ask local and regional businesses, and citizens to help keep your shelter financially viable. You can do this through purchasing, of yearly memberships, supporting fundraisers like the Nectar diners, the SPCA Bookstore, Santa Paws, Woofstock, Paws for a cause; etc., adoption, volunteering time and or expertise and annual or monthly tax deductible donations.

 Sincerely

On behalf of the Board of directors of Animal Shelter (Bathurst) Inc./Gloucester SPCA

 Robert Metzler

President

People are always asking us what they can donate! All items are greatly appreciated! Because of the number of cats and kittens entering our shelter this summer, we spend roughly $50 each week on clumping cat litter, and another $20 to $30 on canned cat food. We also purchase bleach, heavy duty garbage bags, paper towels, and paper for our printer among other things! No donation too big or small and every penny saved lets us help more animals. Your furry friends say thanks!!!

Please note: Due to the overwhelming number of dogs and cats, we are unable to put everyone on the website at this time! Please come in or call, as we have many adoptable cats and dogs just waiting to have their pictures taken and uploaded for adoption!

Attention Doctors and Health professionals!

We can always use 25 gauge x 3cc needles and gloves, swabs, gauze and other medical supplies.

Are you a plumber, electrician or carpenter? Would you like to donate some of your skills to help with minor repair work? There is always something that needs repair but every cent we save helps with our overall cost and allows us to help more animals.

Confessions: Animal Hoarding is a new TV series on Animal Planet. They work with families and friends to help animal hoarders before the problem becomes animal abuse. Do you have a problem, or know someone who has a problem with animal hoarding? They might be able to help!

MEMBERSHIPS!

Want to support the Bathurst SPCA but don't have a lot of time or money? By buying a membership, you are showing the community and the shelter that you care about the animals and what happens to them. It only costs $10 per year, and you receive a membership card. It may not seem like a lot, but if 1,000 people bought a membership this year we would have $10,000!! That money could go towards new cages, a new ventilation system, and better care for the animals. If you want to make a difference become one of those 1,000 people and help make a HUGE difference in not just one but hundreds of animals lives. Great gift idea for those who have everything but love animals!

Protect your pets!

Let responders know that you have pets in your house, and also support the animal shelter by placing a pet information sticker on the entrance to your dwelling. At $2 each, it may be the best investment to protect your pets. They can be bought at the Bathurst SPCA. Thanks for your support!

Kennels are $300 and cages $150. Sponsors will have their names affixed to the cages or kennels to indicate sponsorship. With rising costs of fuel, electricity, wages and supplies it gets harder and harder to provide the much needed service of a shelter in our area. The shelter has experienced a doubling of intakes of animals in the last 5 years and more and more animals need our help. Our adoptions are going up and we have placed animals in all the Maritime provinces, Quebec, Ontario and in the US. Since people actually have to come to Bathurst to adopt, this means many people have experienced our hospitality and are very impressed with our shelter and our little city. While this campaign is aimed largely at the business community anyone can sponsor a kennel or cage and help provide the animals with a place where they will be well cared for. Even if you are not able to sponsor an animal at this level you can buy a symbolic "brick" for $30 with your name or that of a love one or pet on our wall or contribute an amount to the medical fund. The citizens of Bathurst and the surrounding area have been great supporters and you should be proud of your shelter. In this day and age of environmental awareness healthy adoptable animals should not be thrown away and abandoned but should be "recycled" into loving caring homes. Over breeding, unplanned litters and puppy mills add to the vicious cycle of 10,000 animals being needlessly destroyed each and every year in New Brunswick. While it is true some of these animals were beyond help, ill or injured, the overwhelming majority of animals forced to be put down due to lack of space are healthy young animals. Before you buy please look into your shelters in New Brunswick as there are now 1000 + animals sitting in a shelter waiting for a second chance. Rather have a purebred? Well 25% of animals in shelters are either purebred or have at least one purebred parent. And if you cannot adopt then do this one thing; spay/neuter all your pets so they will not be part of the problem. We thank you and the animals thank you.

PREVENT A LITTER AND SAVE A CRITTER!

HOURS OF OPERATION

Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Monday and Sunday closed to the public or by appointment only.

We maintain a 24 hour emergency number for animal control and animals in distress, however, we ask the public not to use this number for general inquiries as it drives up our costs and ties up the emergency line. If you have any questions of a non emergency nature please email gloucesterspca@nb.aibn.com or leave a message on the answering machine. Thank you for your understanding and support.

SPONSOR A PET. Would you like to help an animal but don't have the room to adopt another one? Or maybe you have a particular dog or cat you've seen on the site that you would like to help? Why not sponsor that animal's spay/neuter and increase that animal's adoptability. A hundred dollars for example will help feed and maintain a cat or a small size dog for 3 months  and a large dog for 2 months. Maybe your workplace would like to sponsor a few animals. A picture of the animal chosen will be given to the sponsor with the details of the animal and a follow up letter when the animal is adopted. Great idea for birthday or Christmas gift for that person who has everything! No amount is too small to help. Call the shelter and ask for Amey for more details.

BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!!! New location 695 St. Peter Avenue in the Hudon Building. They are open Monday to Saturday from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. If you have books in good condition to donate you can drop them off at the bookstore. Other than the rent and phone bill all proceeds go to help the shelter as the bookstore is operated solely by volunteers. What a great way to keep up with your reading AND help animals at the same time!

PET FOOD AND SUPPLIES. We are always in need of kitten food, cat food, canned cat food, kitty litter, dog food and treats, collars, leashes, dish detergent, laundry detergent, paper towels, garbage bags, office supplies, 2x2 gauze, surgical gloves, hibitane, deoderant spray, windex, and hand soap. All these items are necessary to the operation of the shelter. Tax receipts available for cash donations. Also anyone who has a heavy duty pressure washer (preferably electric) to give away we can use a back up as well as garden hoses and spray nozzles. If you want to help pay for Vet costs you can go directly to the Bathurst Veterinary clinic or the Appleby Clinic and donate an amount directly to our account or make a cash donation at the shelter directed to our medical funds account. Every cent we save in supplies helps us save more lives. And don't forget Canadian Tire money is as good as cash as we can buy many items for repairs as well as pet supplies and cleaning supplies from there as well.

Foster Families wanted!

Perhaps you are not able to take a new permanent pet or have a house full already. But maybe you are able to help out with fostering animals that are in need of special care, are too young, need some training or need a break from shelter life! We are always in need of foster families who have some extra time to give an animal some TLC.

Please note that this is not a trial adoption. All animals remain the property of the shelter and must be returned when requested and the period of fostering is for a minimum of one week and up to 2 months when raising litters.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL FUND

We have now established an emergency medical fund in order to help animals that we would not otherwise be able to help. These animals would be adoptable except they have correctable medical conditions that may make the prospective adopter relunctant to adopt. Surgeries could cover anything from eye entropion, luxating patellas, teeth extraction or cleaning, broken limbs or other correctable congenital problems. These surgeries would be largely for young adoptable animals that would benefit greatly from medical intervention and have good long term prognosis. It is hoped that the fund will continue to grow so that more animals will be saved. A big thank you to the employees of Clientlogic who have raised $ 423 dollars to kick start the fund. If you wish to donate to the Medical fund please call us at 548-8537 and mention you want to contribute to the Apollo Fund.
