Welcome to the Animal Shelter (Bathurst) and the Gloucester SPCA Web Page!
Sounds Fantastic BBQ, Saturday, July 5th Many thanks to all the folks at Sounds Fantastic for their support during their fundraiser BBQ. In all $334 dollars was raised and some food donations too. Also thanks to Max 104.9 for the great remote. Hopefully more people will be aware of the dangers of leaving their pets in vehicles on hot summer days. Every summer SPCAs get numerous calls of dogs left in cars in parking lots. While many of these calls result in close calls there has been at least 1 death attributed to a dog being left in a car for 4 hours in the Bathurst area. Even with windows turned down the inside of a vehicle in an asphalt parking lot can reach extreme temperatures in very little time. Dogs do not sweat like humans and must pant to try and cool off. As they continue to breath in the hot air they soon become dehydrated and their internal body temperatures quickly rise. The temperatures inside the demo vehicle rose to 51 degrees C at one point. By 4 PM the temperature dropped to 42 degrees. The outside temperature during the afternoon with partly cloudy skies was 25 degrees. Listen to Max 104 Monday morning as they will be announcing the winner of the contest. SPONSOR A KENNEL OR CAGE In the next few months representatives from the shelter will be canvassing city business to sponsor a kennel or cage for a year. Kennels are $300 and cages $150. Sponsors will have their names affixed to the cages or kennels to indicate sponsorship. With rising costs of fuel, electricity, wages and supplies it gets harder and harder to provide the much needed service of a shelter in our area. The shelter has experienced a doubling of intakes of animals in the last 5 years and more and more animals need our help. Our adoptions are going up and we have placed animals in all the Maritime provinces, Quebec, Ontario and in the US. Since people actually have to come to Bathurst to adopt, this means many people have experienced our hospitality and are very impressed with our shelter and our little city. While this campaign is aimed largely at the business community anyone can sponsor a kennel or cage and help provide the animals with a place where they will be well cared for. Even if you are not able to sponsor an animal at this level you can buy a symbolic "brick" for $30 with your name or that of a love one or pet on our wall or contribute an amount to the medical fund. The citizens of Bathurst and the surrounding area have been great supporters and you should be proud of your shelter. In this day and age of environmental awareness healthy adoptable animals should not be thrown away and abandoned but should be "recycled" into loving caring homes. Over breeding, unplanned litters and puppy mills add to the vicious cycle of 10,000 animals being needlessly destroyed each and every year in New Brunswick. While it is true some of these animals were beyond help, ill or injured, the overwhelming majority of animals forced to be put down due to lack of space are healthy young animals. Before you buy please look into your shelters in New Brunswick as there are now 1000 + animals sitting in a shelter waiting for a second chance. Rather have a purebred? Well 25% of animals in shelters are either purebred or have at least one purebred parent. And if you cannot adopt then do this one thing; spay/neuter all your pets so they will not be part of the problem. We thank you and the animals thank you. PREVENT A LITTER AND SAVE A CRITTER! HOURS OF OPERATION Tuesday to Saturday from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Monday and Sunday closed to the public or by appointment only. We maintain a 24 hour emergency number for animal control and animals in distress, however, we ask the public not to use this number for general inquiries as it drives up our costs and ties up the emergency line. If you have any questions of a non emergency nature please email gloucesterspca@nb.aibn.com or leave a message on the answering machine. Thank you for your understanding and support. NEED OF THE FOLLOWING ITEMS Due to the increase in cats coming into the shelter we are in urgent need of cat food, cat litter, kitten food, gloves, dewormer, flea shampoo and products. Canadian Tire money and cash donations are also appreciated to help pay for vaccines, medications and Vet supplies. ALL DONATIONS BIG AND SMALL ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED. Attention Doctors and Health professionals! We can always use 25 gauge x 3cc needles and gloves, gauze and other medical supplies. Are you a plumber, electrician or carpenter? Would you like to donate some of your skills to help with minor repair work? There is always something that needs repair but every cent we save helps with our overall cost and allows us to help more animals. NEW! We are in need of a new computer or good used one or two. Must have Windows XP and be hi speed internet capable. Our record keeping uses an online database and we normally have 3 computers ( all donated thanks) but 1 died on us and the other can't handle the upgrade to the Petpoint Database System. This has slowed down our service to customers and makes it harder for staff to keep our pet profiles up to date. We don't necessarily need the monitors. Also if we have an IT people out there wanting to donate some of their time to reset our network that would be greatly appreciated. Every penny we save goes directly to help another animal in need.

What's New
SPONSOR A PET. Would you like to help an animal but don't have the room to adopt another one? Or maybe you have a particular dog or cat you've seen on the site that you would like to help? Why not sponsor that animal's spay/neuter and increase that animal's adoptability. The average spay or neuter costs about $100. A hundred dollars will also help feed and maintain a cat or a small size dog for 3 months and a large dog for 2 months. Maybe your workplace would like to sponsor a few animals. A picture of the animal chosen will be given to the sponsor with the details of the animal and a follow up letter when the animal is adopted. Great idea for birthday or Christmas gift for that person who has everything! No amount is too small to help. Call the shelter and ask for Joyce for more details. BOOKS, BOOKS, BOOKS!!! New location 695 St. Peter Avenue in the Hudon Building. We will post the hours once that has been established and when and where you can drop off your used books. You can also drop off your books at the shelter at 880 Riordon Drive. PET FOOD AND SUPPLIES. We are always in need of kitten food, cat food, canned cat food, kitty litter, dog food and treats, collars, leashes, dish detergent, laundry detergent, paper towels, garbage bags, office supplies, 2x2 gauze, surgical gloves, hibitane, deoderant spray, windex, and hand soap. All these items are necessary to the operation of the shelter. Tax receipts available for cash donations. Also anyone who has a heavy duty pressure washer (preferably electric) to give away we can use a back up as well as garden hoses and spray nozzles. If you want to help pay for Vet costs you can go directly to the Bathurst Veterinary clinic and donate an amount directly to our account or make a cash donation at the shelter directed to our medical funds account. Every cent we save in supplies helps us save more lives. And don't forget Canadian Tire money is as good as cash as we can buy many items for repairs as well as pet supplies and cleaning supplies from there as well. HBC points can also be converted to gift cards which in turn can be used to buy pet food and cleaning supplies. DONATE A BED PROGRAM. Want to make life better for a shelter dog? Kuranda dog beds has a program to donate a dog bed to shelters at 30% off their retail price. These are poly resin beds that are chew resistant. If you wish you can buy a bed for yourself and donate part of the proceeds to the shelter bed program. Go to http://www.kuranda.com/shop/donate.asp

EMERGENCY MEDICAL FUND
We have now established an emergency medical fund in order to help animals that we would not otherwise be able to help. These animals would be adoptable except they have correctable medical conditions that may make the prospective adopter relunctant to adopt. Surgeries could cover anything from eye entropion, luxating patellas, teeth extraction or cleaning, broken limbs or other correctable congenital problems. These surgeries would be largely for young adoptable animals that would benefit greatly from medical intervention and have good long term prognosis. It is hoped that the fund will continue to grow so that more animals will be saved. A big thank you to the employees of Clientlogic who have raised $ 423 dollars to kick start the fund. If you wish to donate to the Medical fund please call us at 548-8537 and mention you want to contribute to the Apollo Fund.
How can you help?
We are a charitable non profit organization and depend on public donations, members and volunteers to operate. Tax receipts are available for monetary donations. As well as cash donations we accept Canadian Tire money and supplies. We also need help with fundraising, membership drives, dog walking and others. We also accept quality used books for our Book store. Every month we need close to $15,000 to cover the cost of wages, utilities, gas, supplies, pet food, vet supplies and services, and various other items to pay for the daily operations of the shelter. We do not receive funds from any government agency to help run the shelter itself. At present we take in about 900 animals and this number keeps rising. As the only shelter for the entire county of Gloucester we do our best to help as many animals as possible but unfortunately rising costs affects us just as much as anyone else. As people cut back to help pay their own expenses too often homeless animals are last on the list for charitable giving. Every little bit helps from collecting pop cans, Canadian Tire money, donating your Club Z points, loose change, an extra bottle of Javex or paper towels during your grocery shopping to donating your used books. Even volunteering a few hours a week to help clean, cut the grass, or offering professional services like carpentry or plumbing can help save countless dollars that can be used to help more animals. Sadly during hard economic times more people end up moving or giving up their animals which adds another burden to the shelter as local adoptions go down and strays go up. If you would like more information or are interested in volunteering please call us. We look forward to hearing from you.
